Academic Advisor A faculty or staff member who provides guidance and support as you navigate your academic journey. Admissions Counselor A university representative who helps prospective students and their families with the application process. Bulldog Resource Center (BRC) A one-stop hub for academic support services. The BRC offers free tutoring, writing assistance, and other resources to help you succeed in your classes.

Campus The physical grounds and facilities of a college or university. UMD's picturesque campus provides students with a vibrant and inclusive environment for learning, collaboration, and personal development.

Campus Life This term refers to the wide range of social, cultural, and extracurricular activities and experiences available to students outside of their academic studies. This includes everything from student organizations and clubs to campus events and traditions.

College An academic unit within a university, often focused on a specific field of study. UMD is made up of four colleges, each offering a collection of related degree programs:

Credit Hour A unit of academic credit that represents the amount of time you spend in a class. At UMD, most courses are one to four credit hours, which are used to track your progress toward graduation.

Dining Hall A campus facility where students gather to enjoy meals and socialize with peers. UMD Dining prioritizes quality, variety, and inclusivity. We feature an all-you-care-to-eat Superior Dining Center and a diverse Food Court with options like burgers, pizza, burritos, and more. Mobile ordering is available via Grubhub, and our Northern Shores Coffee Shop offers locally sourced coffee. 

Dorm Informal shorthand for "dormitory," which refers to residential housing facilities for students on campus. UMD offers a variety of furnished housing options, including residence halls and on-campus apartments. Compare to: On-Campus Apartment

Electives Optional courses that students may choose to take outside of their major or general education requirements.

Financial Aid Monetary assistance provided to students to help cover the costs of their education, including tuition, fees, and living expenses. UMD offers a variety of financial aid options, including scholarships, grants, work-study programs, and loans.

GPA Abbreviation for "grade point average," a numerical representation of your academic performance based on the grades you receive in your courses.

Greek Life A term that refers to fraternities and sororities, which are social and academic organizations for students. These groups are often focused on community service, leadership, and fostering strong friendships.

Lake Superior As the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area, it's a way of life at UMD. This shimmering gem is more than a scenic backdrop—it's our backyard. Lecture A formal instructional session in which a professor presents course material to a large group of students.

Liberal Education Program ("Lib Ed") UMD’s version of the common educational experience for all undergraduate degree programs. It prepares students to lead productive and socially responsible lives in a diverse and rapidly changing world. See also: Gen Ed

Major A specific area of academic focus you choose to study in-depth. At UMD, students select majors aligned with their interests and goals, preparing them for success in their chosen fields upon graduation.

Minor An optional secondary area of academic concentration you can choose to complement your major. Similar to majors, minors provide you with the opportunity for focused learning in a particular subject area.

On-Campus Apartment An apartment-style housing option on campus that typically offers more space and independence than a traditional residence hall room. Compare to: Dorm

Professor An academic instructor at the college or university level who holds advanced degrees and conducts research in their field of expertise. UMD professors are renowned scholars and educators dedicated to inspiring students, advancing knowledge, and making meaningful contributions to their disciplines.

RA (Resident Advisor) A student leader responsible for providing guidance and support to residents living in campus housing. RAs play a crucial role in fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive living environment.

Recreational Sports A program that offers a variety of sports and fitness activities for students, including intramural sports, club sports, and fitness classes. This is a great way to stay active, meet new people, and have fun.

Semester A period of academic study lasting approximately 15-16 weeks. The academic year is typically divided into fall and spring semesters.

Student Organizations Student-led groups or clubs focused on a specific interest, from academic and professional topics to hobbies and cultural activities. Joining a student organization is a great way to meet new people and get involved in the campus community.

Study Abroad The opportunity for students to engage in academic coursework and cultural immersion in another country. UMD offers a variety of study abroad programs, allowing you to broaden your perspectives, enhance your language skills, and explore new cultures. Compare to: Study Away

Undergrad Short for "undergraduate," referring to a student who is enrolled in a bachelor's degree program. As an undergrad at UMD, you'll participate in engaging coursework, hands-on learning experiences, and opportunities for research and exploration.
